The Mystery of The Google Algorithm

The Mystery of the Google Algorithm

In the vast expanse of the internet, where just shy of 2 billion websites compete for attention, there is one master of our digital fate: the Google Algorithm. For website owners and digital marketers, understanding this enigmatic entity is akin to deciphering an ancient scroll. Let’s take an overview of the mysterious Google Algorithm, exploring what is known, what remains in the shadows, and how the world's most popular search engine has evolved in recent years.

So, what is known about the Google Algorithm?

The Google Algorithm is the intricate formula that dictates from the trillions (yes, trillions!) of indexed web pages to give us the search results you see when you type a query into Google. In fact, Google searches through 30 trillion pages, 100 billion times per month and generates the answer to your query in just over an 8th of a second. Pretty amazing... While Google has revealed some aspects of its functioning, the exact details remain shrouded in secrecy. For instance, we know that strategically incorporating relevant keywords into your content can greatly enhance your chances of ranking higher in the search results. We also know that the algorithm is a concoction of many algorithms and considers upwards of 200 factors, some of which are keywords, searcher intent, website relevance, content quality, freshness of information and user experience.

What is not known about the Google Algorithm?

Despite some valuable insights provided by Google, much (and, in fact most) about the details of the  Algorithm remain a well-guarded secret. The precise weight that is assigned to each factor, how exactly the intricate algorithms assess backlinks and the numerous ways in which user experience metrics influence rankings—all these details are veiled in obscurity. Google's continuous updates and tweaks further add to the mystery and complexity. Google has said that the Algorithm is changed (on average) 6 – 10 times per day plus several major changes per year (the most recent being August 2023) as it is adapted to changing online behaviors and technological advancements. For website owners, this ambiguity means staying vigilant, embracing best practices and remaining adaptable in the ever-shifting digital landscape.

Who are the architects behind the Algorithm?

The development and maintenance of the Google Algorithm are carried out by a select group of highly skilled engineers and data scientists but just how many is not known. While Google, as a company, has a vast workforce that is spread throughout several countries, only a fraction of these individuals are directly involved in Algorithm development. The exact number remains confidential, but it is widely acknowledged and stands to reason that Google's Algorithm team comprises some of the brightest minds in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence. Their collective efforts shape the Algorithm, ensuring it remains at the forefront of delivering accurate and relevant search results to users worldwide.

How often does the Google Algorithm change?

As already mentioned, the Google Algorithm is not a stagnant entity, far from it. It undergoes continuous refinement. Google's commitment to providing users with the best possible search experience drives these frequent updates. While minor changes occur daily, significant updates, known as core updates, happen several times a year. These core updates can have a substantial impact on website rankings, making them of paramount importance to website owners and digital marketers. Adapting to these changes is simply a must if you want to rank in the top of the results.

How has it changed in the Last 5 years?

Over the past five years, the Google Algorithm has undergone transformative changes, reshaping the digital landscape. One notable shift has been the increased emphasis on user experience. Google's Core Web Vitals, introduced in 2020, assess metrics like page loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. As a result, websites that offer smooth, fast-loading experiences are rewarded with higher rankings, reflecting Google's commitment to enhancing user satisfaction and experience. Additionally, there has also been a growing focus on mobile-first indexing, as more and more searches are made from mobile devices. Websites optimized for mobile platforms are given a competitive edge in search rankings, ensuring they reach a broader audience.

In the ever-changing landscape of online visibility, knowledge is the key to success. Understanding what is known about the Google Algorithm and implementing that information into your website,  empowers website owners to jump ahead of everyone else. By embracing SEO best practices, staying updated on Algorithm changes and optimizing user experience, you can harness the Algorithm's power to elevate your website's visibility and reach your target audience more effectively.
